The story behind a company often captivates many, and ours is one that many can relate to.
Our journey began in 2021 with a traumatic experience—a medical emergency that turned us into a medical family during the height of COVID-19. As a family, we learned the meaning of living in a constant state of anxiety, always on edge and uncertain about the outcome that could potentially lead to losing our child.
Each day, our founder, shaped by her own childhood trauma, practiced the skills she had acquired over the years with her daughter and a teddy bear. After spending countless hours and days in the hospital, she recognized that these essential skills were not widely known. She also discovered that not all teddy bears are suitable for hospital environments and could be improved.
To fill this gap, she developed the Supportive Little Buddy, a teddy bear that encompasses all the techniques she had been teaching her child during their hospital stays and visits. Initially designed for hospital use, these weighted stuffed animals have since found a place in classrooms, clinics, and homes—benefiting not just her child but everyone, regardless of their medical condition.
Why we are called Lakunakai
Lacuna means a missing portion in a book or manuscript.
Kai means 'keeper of the keys and earth' and in Japanese it has a few meanings but the ones we were drawn to are ocean, restoration and recovery.
Our Name is Symbolic. If you can find the missing page in your manuscript, then you can choose to become the master of your own sea. The missing page represents information you don’t know. Becoming the master of your own sea represents better connecting the mind and body which reflects in how you show up in the world.
Why a wave is our logo
A clapotis wave is formed by two colliding wave patterns, for example one from the west and the other from the east.
Our Logo is also Symbolic. Waves are pattern making machines just the like the nervous system. When overstimulated or going through a traumatic experience, life’s moments can feel like a standing wave. It’s hard to get through that standing wave, however, with the right tools you can. It’s when you get to the other side of trauma or when we become less overstimulated that we can see the beauty within the standing wave. A clapotis wave truly is beautiful and so powerful.
