Stories Teach More Than Words

My mom had a magical way of reading to my sisters and me when we were growing up.

She wouldn’t simply read.

She would pause almost on every page, point to a character, and ask:

“How do you think they feel?”

Books became more than stories.
They became conversations.

While reading with your child, try pausing and asking:

How would you feel if you were in their place?
Why do you think she felt sad when that happened?
Was that a helpful way to express anger?
What could they have done differently?

These small pauses build something powerful.

Empathy.
Emotional awareness.
Critical thinking.
Better decision-making.

You don’t need a formal lesson on emotional intelligence.

You need a story.
A few thoughtful questions.
And the willingness to slow down.

Reading together isn’t just about literacy.

It’s about raising emotionally aware humans.

If you are looking for elementary books to get started The Elephant and Piggie series are a great place to start.
